When setting up a home theatre, it's easy to forget that sound and vision are equally important. As Alfred Hitchcock said, what the audience hears is fifty percent of the experience. Whether we're talking about the experience of watching a film like Apocalypse now and letting the surround sound really immerse us in the movie, or just getting the most out of your remastered CDs, Hifi audio and Hi Definition television are both equally necessary for a great home theater.
Selecting Hifi Audio Equipment
When selecting a console or a CD player or something to play music and hook up to your hi definition television, the fact is that no console is really better than any other in terms of the quality of the sound. Rather, what you're looking for are points of compatibility, durability and price. As long as you can plug all of the requisite components into the console, it should be fine. The fact is that just about anything you buy will be Dolby Digital compatible.
Buying Hifi speakers, on the other hand, is something worth considering. For the full home theatre experience, your audio equipment list will include Hifi woofers and sub woofers, a center speaker, left and right speakers, and left center and right center speakers. It sounds pricy, but buying all of this audio equipment in a set will save you a lot of money.
Hi Definition Televisions, Projectors and 3D TV
When buying a TV set for your theatre, you'll have a number of televisions to choose from. YOu have Hi Definition televisions, projectors and 3D TV. So, which to choose?
Well, projectors can be tricky, just so you know. Rear projectors tend to work about the same as a normal television, but front projector televisions don't really work unless you have total dark. The upside is that they make them today to look as good as any HD set, and you can project at any size assuming you have a large enough wall or screen, though.
3D TV is a thing of the future, and that's both good and bad. It's good because you'll be ready when they start releasing a new 3D TV compatible movie every week, and bad because there's not much out there right now to take advantage of such a set.
If you're shopping for simplicity's sake, an HD set may be your best bet, but you really should take a moment to weigh all the pros and cons of 3D and projector televisions before making your final decision. A front projection set, while hard to watch in the daytime, really does make you feel like you have a movie theatre at home.
Setting it All Up
When setting up a home theatre, consider what you're really after here. Do you want a gaming zone with surround sound audio equipment to keep opponents from getting the drop on you from behind? Do you want to simulate the movie theatre experience at home? Or do you just want a good little spot to watch TV? Whatever the case may be, atmosphere counts. If you have a den or garage you're converting, setting it up with the right decor and furniture is just what you need to complete the home theatre.
