In order for your ability to buy cheap laptops expand, you first must understand what all of the numbers mean. There is a general rule of thumb when it comes to buying a laptop online, and that is that the bigger the number, the faster the laptop. This rule of thumb only works to a certain extent, however, as there are bottlenecks in a system that won't allow for speed past a certain mark.

The first and easiest thing to understand is the hard drive. You're going to see three numbers associated with a hard drive. One number (usually around 320) is the amount of space the hard drive has on it. You see, the hard drive stores all of the information on your computer, such as pictures and music. When you go to save a document, you're saving it directly to the hard drive. If this is new information to you, you're not going to need anything bigger than 200 gigs or so. Most laptops come with 320 gigs, which is a great number for many people. The second number associated with a hard drive is the RPM at which the platter spins. The number is going to be either 5400 or 7200. 7200 means its' faster, but many people won't be able to tell. 5400 rpm hard drives are perfectly acceptable for almost everyone. The third number is the cache size. All you need to know is that bigger is better, but most laptop hard drives are limited to 16 megs for their cache size.

Another thing to consider when you are looking to buy cheap netbooks is the amount of ram. You want at least 2 gigs of ram in most systems. When you go to buy cheap netbooks, however, even 1 gig is acceptable. Netbooks are less powerful laptops and don't require the same amount of ram.

The last number is the speed of the processor. Most laptops come in 2.0ghz or higher. This is a great clock speed for pretty much anyone. Remember, higher is better!
